The vow of obedience

Wedding vows used to contain this vow for the woman,

WILT thou have this Man to thy wedded Husband, to live together after God's ordinance in the holy estate of Matrimony? Wilt thou obey him, and serve him, love, honour, and keep him in sickness and in health; and, forsaking all other, keep thee only unto him, so long as ye both shall live?

The Woman shall answer, I will.

This article pretty much sums up the way I view this matter. Here is where I blogged about some sample wedding vows from Bible.org. I was not impressed.

Joel and Damian have written insightful posts on the issue of obeying one's leader, pastor or husband.

I hate writing posts like this, then having someone else turn it around on me, and making me reexamine how my wife and I understand 'obey.'

Just not fair.

I wasn't intending to do that. I just took off from where Damian took it. :-)

For some men, the vow to obey is a weapon they can point at their wife whenever they want to get their way. I am sure women have their own weapons, but that doesn't excuse anyone from using weapons to get their own way.

It's good to remember that wives are not required to obey husbands in Scripture.
